Lasik refractive surgery (laser intrastromal keratomileusis) will now allow you to see without glasses or contact lenses. Using the light of the Excimer laser, the procedure can eliminate a lifetime of dependence on glasses and contact lenses and takes only a few minutes to perform.
Lasik corrects vision by reshaping the cornea so that light can focus more precisely on the retina, thereby reducing or eliminating nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. Using an instrument known as a microkeratome, a thin flap of corneal tissue is folded back. The laser then removes a predetermined amount of tissue from the inner cornea to correct the individual’s refractive error. The cornea is made flatter to treat nearsightedness, steeper to treat farsightedness and/or more spherical to correct astigmatism. The corneal flap is placed back in its original position where it bonds without the need for stitches.
A simple Lasik procedure can treat low to very severe refractive errors. Intacs is another growing refractive surgery technique. In this procedure, a small piece of plastic is inserted inside the cornea. Both procedures are quick and painless and many patients experience an almost immediate dramatic improvement in their vision. The goal is to get as close to normal vision as possible and have good uncorrected vision. It is not unusual to still need some form of correction to help you see after surgery. Lasik cannot prevent your eyes from changing in the future.
